How to Extend Your Visa on Arrival in Bali (Step by Step)

Planning a trip to Indonesia? Visa processing takes time

You arrived in Bali on a Visa on Arrival (VOA) with 30 days on the clock. Now you want to stay another month. Good news: Indonesia allows one VOA extension for an extra 30 days, giving you a maximum of 60 days total. Bad news: you only get that one extension, and you must apply before your current permit expires.

This guide walks you through the extension process step by step. It applies whether you got VOA at the airport or applied online as an e-VOA before flying. If you have not arrived yet, start with our how to apply for e-VOA online guide instead.

Before you start: are you eligible?

VOA extension is only available if you entered on a Visa on Arrival or e-VOA. It does not apply to:

  • Visa-free entry (ASEAN nationals and a small list of other countries). That 30-day stay cannot be extended.
  • B1/B2, C1, or other pre-arranged visas. Those follow different extension rules.
  • Anyone who has already used their one VOA extension. The 60-day ceiling is firm.

You also cannot extend if your current permit has already expired. At that point you are in overstay territory. See Indonesia overstay fines in 2026 and use our overstay calculator to understand the cost of waiting too long.

For a quick comparison of how long each visa type lets you stay, read our VOA vs B1/B2 vs C1 stay length guide.

When to apply for your extension

Do not wait until day 30. Immigration needs processing time, and offices get busy during peak season (June to August, December to January).

A practical rule: start your extension 7 to 10 days before your permit expires. That gives enough buffer if immigration requests an in-person visit or additional documents.

Your permitted stay counts from your date of entry, not the day you paid for VOA or received your e-VOA PDF. Check the stamp in your passport or the expiry date on your e-visa to know your deadline.

If you miss the window, you cannot extend. You must leave Indonesia or face daily overstay fines.

What you need for a VOA extension

Gather these before you start:

  • Valid passport with at least 6 months remaining and your original VOA entry stamp
  • e-VOA PDF (if you applied online before arrival)
  • Passport-style photo (recent, white background)
  • Proof of onward travel (return or continuation ticket)
  • Accommodation details (hotel booking, rental agreement, or host letter)
  • Payment for government and any service fees

Immigration may request additional documents depending on your case. An agent will tell you exactly what is needed before submission.

Most travelers use a visa agent because the process involves immigration portal submission and sometimes an in-person appointment. Bali Visa Hub handles e-VOA extensions through a licensed partner in Bali.

  1. Contact us with your passport details, entry date, and current permit expiry.
  2. Send your documents (passport scan, photo, e-VOA if applicable).
  3. We verify everything and submit the extension application through the official immigration system.
  4. Immigration processes your file. Regular service takes up to 14 working days. Express service takes 5 to 6 working days.
  5. Attend your immigration appointment if required. We schedule this and tell you what to bring.
  6. Receive your extended permit. Your new expiry date will be 30 days after your original permit end date, for 60 days total from entry.

Extension service fee through Bali Visa Hub: IDR 1,300,000. This is separate from the original IDR 500,000 government VOA fee you paid on arrival or during e-VOA application.

Step-by-step: extend yourself at immigration

You can apply directly at a local immigration office, though the process is less hand-holding and office staff may not speak fluent English.

  1. Find your nearest immigration office. In Bali, most extensions are handled at Kantor Imigrasi Kelas I TPI Denpasar or the Kantor Imigrasi Kelas II TPI Badung office. Confirm current locations and hours at imigrasi.go.id before you go.
  2. Arrive with all documents listed above. Bring originals, not just copies.
  3. Take a queue number or check whether you need a prior appointment (policies vary).
  4. Submit your extension application at the counter. Staff will review your passport and current permit.
  5. Pay the extension fee at the payment counter. Keep every receipt.
  6. Complete biometrics if requested (fingerprint and photo). This is routine for extensions.
  7. Collect your updated permit or confirmation. Check the new expiry date before leaving.

Processing times at the office vary. Busy periods can mean multiple visits. This is why many travelers prefer agent assistance.

Costs: what you will pay

Here is how the fees break down:

  • Original VOA government fee: IDR 500,000 (paid at arrival or during e-VOA application). Already done.
  • Extension government fee: Included in the extension application process (amount set by immigration).
  • Agent service fee: IDR 1,300,000 through Bali Visa Hub's extension service.

There is no second extension. Once you reach 60 days from your entry date, your VOA path is finished.

What to expect at the immigration office

If your extension requires an in-person visit, plan for a short appointment, usually 30 to 60 minutes.

You will likely need to:

  • Present your physical passport
  • Have a photo and fingerprints taken
  • Answer basic questions about your stay (accommodation, purpose of visit, onward travel)
  • Wait while staff process your file

Dress presentably. Bring a pen, your phone charger, and patience. Offices are air-conditioned but queues can be long if you arrive without an appointment.

After your extension: what next?

Once extended, you have used your only VOA extension. Your maximum stay is 60 days from your original entry date.

If you need longer than 60 days, you will need a different visa. Common options:

  • B1/B2 Tourist Visa: Up to 180 days with extensions (must apply before or after leaving, not from VOA in most cases)
  • Leave and re-enter on a new VOA if eligible (not a reliable long-term strategy)
  • E33G Digital Nomad Visa if you work remotely for overseas clients

Repeated visa runs to simulate residency can raise questions at immigration. If you genuinely need months in Bali, plan the right visa from the start. Our complete Bali visa guide covers all options.

Common mistakes to avoid

Waiting until the last day. Processing takes time. Start at least a week before expiry.

Assuming you get two extensions. VOA allows one extension only. B1/B2 and C1 allow two extensions, but those are different visas.

Confusing visa-free entry with VOA. ASEAN passport holders often enter visa-free for 30 days with no extension option. That is not the same as VOA.

Working on VOA. Tourism only. Remote work, freelancing, and paid activities require the correct visa.

Ignoring the expiry date. The date on your passport stamp or e-visa is what counts, not when you booked your flight.

Frequently asked questions

Can I extend my VOA twice?

No. One extension of 30 days is the maximum. Total stay is 60 days from entry.

Can I extend visa-free entry?

No. Visa-free stays (30 days for qualifying nationalities) cannot be extended. You must leave Indonesia or apply for a new visa from abroad.

How long does VOA extension processing take?

Through Bali Visa Hub: 5 to 6 working days (express) or up to 14 working days (regular). DIY processing at immigration varies.

What if my extension is denied?

You must leave Indonesia before your current permit expires. Staying past expiry triggers overstay fines. See our overstay fines guide for what to do if you are already past your date.

Do I need to visit immigration in person?

Often yes. Immigration may require biometrics and a brief interview. An agent can schedule and accompany you.
