Landing at Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) is most travellers' first contact with Indonesian immigration. The process is straightforward if you know what to expect, but small mistakes (wrong visa, unpaid levy, missing documents) can turn a smooth arrival into a long wait at the counter.

This guide walks you through immigration at Bali's main airport step by step: what to prepare before you land, what happens at each stage, and how to avoid the most common hold-ups.

Before you land: get these ready

Have the following accessible on your phone and in your carry-on bag:

  • Passport valid at least 6 months with 2 blank pages
  • Visa or entry permit: e-VOA PDF, pre-approved B1/B2/C1 e-visa, or readiness to pay for VOA at the counter
  • Love Bali levy voucher (IDR 150,000) with QR code, or plan to pay at the airport counter
  • Return or onward flight confirmation
  • Accommodation details (hotel booking, villa address, or host contact)
  • Proof of funds if requested (bank statement or card)

Not sure which visa you need? Start with our complete Bali visa guide. For e-VOA setup before flying, see how to apply for e-VOA online. For the separate tourist levy, see our Love Bali levy guide.

Arrival flow at Ngurah Rai: overview

Most international arrivals follow this sequence:

  1. Disembark and follow signs to immigration
  2. Love Bali levy check (if not already paid online)
  3. Immigration counter (passport, visa, questions)
  4. Baggage claim
  5. Customs declaration (if applicable)
  6. Exit to arrivals hall

Total time varies from 30 minutes in quiet periods to 90+ minutes during peak evening arrivals. Having documents ready on your phone saves significant time.

Step 1: Love Bali tourist levy

Before or during immigration processing, officials may verify that you paid the IDR 150,000 Bali tourist levy. This is separate from your visa fee.

If you paid online: Open your Love Bali email and have the QR voucher ready. Screenshot it before landing in case airport Wi-Fi is slow.

If you have not paid: Look for Love Bali payment counters near immigration. Payment is cashless (cards and electronic methods). Paying online before your flight is faster. Full steps in our Love Bali levy guide.

Step 2: Immigration counters

Ngurah Rai has dedicated lanes for different entry types. Signs may indicate VOA, e-VOA, visa-free, and general immigration. Follow the lane that matches your situation.

Visa on Arrival (VOA) at the airport

If you did not apply for e-VOA online, you can purchase VOA at the counter if your nationality qualifies. The government fee is IDR 500,000 for 30 days. Payment is typically cashless.

You receive a stamp or permit showing your 30-day stay. You can extend once for another 30 days while in Indonesia. See our VOA extension guide for the process.

e-VOA (applied online)

If you applied through the official immigration portal before flying, present your passport and e-VOA approval. The officer verifies your details and stamps your passport. This lane is usually faster than buying VOA on arrival because payment is already done.

Bali Visa Hub can help with e-VOA applications if you want support before you travel.

Visa-free entry

Nationals of ASEAN countries and a small list of other countries (see our visa-free entry guide) may enter without a visa for 30 days. You still pay the Love Bali levy. Visa-free stays cannot be extended.

Pre-arranged visas (B1/B2, C1, E33G, etc.)

Show your printed or digital e-visa and passport. The officer checks that your visa category matches your stated purpose of visit. Long-stay tourists on B1/B2 should have their full 60-day initial permit noted on entry.

Step 3: Questions immigration may ask

Officers can ask short questions about your trip. Answer clearly and honestly. Common topics:

  • Purpose of visit: Tourism, visiting family, holiday
  • Length of stay: Should match your visa or entry permit
  • Accommodation: Hotel name, area, or host details
  • Onward travel: When and where you plan to leave Indonesia

They are not trying to catch you out. Inconsistent answers (saying two weeks when your visa allows six months of remote work plans) raise flags. Tourism visas are for tourism. If you plan to work remotely, you need the correct visa before you arrive.

Step 4: Passport stamp and permitted stay

After approval, you receive an entry stamp or sticker showing your permitted stay end date. Check it before leaving the counter. This date is what counts for overstay calculations, not your flight booking.

If the date looks wrong, politely ask the officer to verify before you walk away. Fixing errors later requires an immigration office visit.

Track your expiry and plan extensions early. Use our overstay calculator if you are unsure how many days remain.

Step 5: Baggage and customs

After immigration, collect your bags and proceed through customs. Most tourists have nothing to declare. Green and red channel rules apply as at any international airport.

Indonesia has strict rules on certain goods (drugs, weapons, protected species, large amounts of currency). When in doubt, declare.

How long does immigration take?

Rough guides:

  • e-VOA with levy pre-paid: 20 to 45 minutes total in normal periods
  • VOA purchased at airport: 30 to 60 minutes depending on queue
  • Peak arrivals (evening flights, holiday season): Add 30 to 60 minutes

Evening flights from Australia, Singapore, and the Middle East often arrive in clusters. The immigration hall gets busy between 6pm and 11pm.

Common problems at Ngurah Rai

No e-VOA and long VOA queue. Apply online before you fly if eligible. Our e-VOA guide covers the steps.

Unpaid Love Bali levy. Have your QR voucher ready or use the airport counter. The levy is mandatory for international tourists.

Passport damage or short validity. Immigration can deny entry if your passport is in poor condition or has less than 6 months validity.

Wrong visa for your activities. Working, volunteering, or creating commercial content on a tourist visa can lead to enforcement. See can you work remotely on a tourist visa?

No onward ticket or accommodation proof. Have digital copies ready even if not always requested.

Typo on e-visa. Passport details must match exactly. A single wrong digit can invalidate your visa.

Tips for a smooth arrival

  • Apply for e-VOA and pay Love Bali levy before your flight
  • Screenshot all QR codes and visas offline on your phone
  • Keep passport, visa, and levy voucher in your carry-on, not checked luggage
  • Have accommodation and return flight details in a notes app
  • Answer immigration questions briefly and consistently
  • Check your entry stamp date before leaving the counter
  • Travel outside peak hours if you can (mid-week morning arrivals are quietest)

After immigration: extending your stay

If you entered on VOA and want 60 days, start your extension around day 25. If you are on B1/B2, plan extensions at day 50 and day 110. Do not wait until the last day.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bali immigration different from the rest of Indonesia?

No. Bali enforces national Indonesian immigration law. Ngurah Rai is the main airport, but the rules are the same nationwide.

Do I need a printed visa?

Digital copies on your phone usually work, but have PDFs saved offline. A printed backup does not hurt.

Can I buy VOA and pay Love Bali levy with cash?

VOA and levy payments at the airport are cashless. Cards and electronic payment methods are standard.

What happens if I am refused entry?

You may be held for the next return flight at your expense. Ensure your documents are correct before you travel.

Do children go through the same process?

Yes. Each traveller including children needs the appropriate entry permit and Love Bali levy.
