Your passport is the first document Indonesian immigration checks — before your visa, your flight, or your hotel booking. Get the validity wrong and you can be denied boarding, refused entry at Ngurah Rai, or stuck mid-trip when your passport runs out before your visa extension ends.
This guide explains how much validity you need, how to calculate it, and what to do if your passport is close to expiry.
The short answer: 6 months from arrival
For most travellers entering Indonesia — including Bali — your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival.
This applies whether you enter on:
- Visa on Arrival (VOA) or e-VOA
- B1/B2 tourist visa
- C1 tourist visa
- Digital Nomad Visa E33G
- Visa-free entry (ASEAN nationals and other eligible countries)
Airlines enforce this at check-in. Immigration enforces it again on arrival. There is no workaround at the counter.
How to calculate if your passport qualifies
Use your arrival date in Indonesia, not your departure from home.
Example: You land in Bali on 15 August 2026. Your passport must be valid until at least 15 February 2027.
Quick checklist before you book:
- Find your passport expiry date (on the bio page).
- Add 6 months to your planned arrival date.
- If expiry falls before that date — renew before you travel.
Planning a 60-day VOA extension or 180-day B1/B2 stay? Your passport must cover the entire stay, not just arrival. A passport expiring 4 months after landing fails the 6-month rule on day one.
Other passport requirements
Blank pages
Immigration needs space for entry stamps, visa stickers, and extension stamps. Carry at least 2 blank pages. Our Bali visa guide lists this alongside other entry documents.
Passport condition
Damaged passports — water stains, torn pages, cracked covers, or unreadable MRZ lines — can be refused even if validity is fine. Replace damaged passports before applying for any visa.
Emergency travel documents
Emergency passports and temporary travel documents are generally not accepted for Indonesian visa applications or entry. Use a full validity machine-readable passport.
Children's passports
Minors need their own passport. Indonesia does not admit children on a parent's passport alone. Validity rules are the same: 6+ months from arrival.
Passport validity by visa type
Long-stay permits need enough validity to cover the visa period plus processing. If you are applying for KITAS or a multiple-entry business visa, confirm requirements with your sponsor or agent early.

What happens if your passport does not qualify?
At the airline check-in desk
The airline can refuse to board you. They face fines for carrying inadmissible passengers. This is common and non-negotiable — renewing or rebooking is your only fix.
At Bali immigration (Ngurah Rai)
Officers check passport validity, visa match, and condition. Failure can mean immediate return on the next flight at your expense. See common visa rejection reasons for related issues.
During your stay
If your passport expires while you are in Indonesia, you cannot extend your visa legally on that document. You must renew at your embassy (often in Jakarta), update immigration records, and risk overstay fines if your permit expires first.
Passport expiring soon? What to do
Renew before you fly
If your passport fails the 6-month rule, renew at home before travel. Processing times vary (2–6 weeks in many countries). Expedited services exist for urgent trips.
Already in Indonesia with a short-validity passport
- Contact your embassy or consulate immediately.
- Do not wait until the day before your visa expires.
- Speak to a licensed agent about whether you can extend on a renewed passport.
New passport after visa approval
If you renew after receiving an e-visa but before travel, you typically need a new visa — e-visas are tied to passport number. Re-apply with the new bio page scan.
Common mistakes travellers make
- Counting from departure date instead of arrival date in Indonesia
- Forgetting extensions — a 60-day VOA stay needs 6 months validity on arrival, not just 30 days
- Damaged passport assumed "good enough" because expiry date is fine
- Mismatched e-visa after passport renewal
- Booking non-refundable flights before checking validity
Passport validity and visa applications
When you apply for e-VOA, B1/B2, or C1 online, the portal checks passport scans. Typos and expired dates cause automatic rejection. Details must match your physical passport exactly — one wrong digit invalidates the visa.

Quick pre-flight checklist
- Passport valid 6+ months from Bali arrival date
- 2+ blank pages, good physical condition
- E-visa or VOA matches current passport number
- Return or onward ticket within permitted stay
- Accommodation proof and funds if asked
